This discourse between the Messiah and the Pharisees is recorded in the gospels according to Matthew and Mark. We’ll take it from Mark 10:1–9.

Coming from Capernaum, Jesus went to the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan, and the people came to Him again. And again, as was His custom, He taught them.

The Pharisees came to test Him, asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce a wife?”

He answered them, “What did Moses command you?”

They said, “Moses allowed us to write a certificate of divorce and divorce her.”

Jesus answered them, Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, He made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, And the two shall be one flesh. So then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has yoked together, let man not separate.
